Project / Alterations and extension to existing property, Newport
Client / Private Client
Description
When our client moved into their charming period property in 2021, it quickly became clear that some aspects of their new home weren’t quite working. The client needed a dedicated studio with a clear separation between work and home life, while both wanted to maximise their home’s character and potential.

Originally built in 1905 the building was used for housing Newport Railway employees. The plan featured a traditional symmetrical layout—a central entrance hall with a staircase, flanked by two lounges on the ground floor and two bedrooms above. The recent narrow lean-to at the rear housed the kitchen and bathroom, created a disjointed flow. With the principal elevation facing east, the main living areas only received sunlight in the early morning or late evening.

The home’s elevated position at the end of Shepherd’s Road offered stunning views across the River Tay and Dundee—a feature we saw as a fantastic opportunity. Our design focused on transforming the layout to optimize natural light, enhance views, and add bedroom space.
The key move was flipping the main living spaces to the upper floor, flooding these rooms with natural light and capturing the views. This also provided the separation needed for the studio. We added a striking two-storey timber-clad extension to the side, with a projecting balcony extending from the new open-plan living area to capture panoramic views of the river Tay.
By carefully reimagining the layout, we have transformed the house into a contemporary, open-plan home tailored to our client's lifestyle.
The result is a beautifully balanced blend of period charm and modern comfort, celebrating the home’s heritage while meeting today’s needs—an inviting, light-filled environment perfect for relaxation and entertaining.
