Description

We were appointed to design a new dwelling for a couple already living on the street. The site was a long relatively narrow tract of land, with a tranquil and private nature.

Design Approach: The design approach has adopted 3 fundamental principles:

1. ‘Inside-outside’ house. The dwelling is of a bespoke design that seeks to provide strategically framed views of the natural setting, maximise daylight into the plan and provide a series of external ‘terraces’ that directly open into the building to draw the natural environment inside the living spaces. Large, carefully positioned bi-folding doors seek to enhance this natural connection further.

2. Site integration. The proposals are designed comprehensively around the existing natural features of the site, to make the most of the setting. The long, linear profile and modest vertical rise of the house is designed to appear as a vertical reflection to the existing stone wall running the length of Ellieslea Road. The proposed home is designed to gradually increase in height vertically to the South of the site, culminating in an open-end gable that maximises daylight influx inside and strategically frames the views across the Tay estuary. The natural slope of the site has been utilised to generate further privacy and terraced seating areas screened from the prevailing wind. The footprint and massing of the proposed have been comprehensively shaped around providing the best possible amenity spaces, this has been informed by our sunlight modelling exercises, topographical studies and site visits. 3

. Embrace the surrounds. From the outset the proposed was designed to be of a modest, human scale, ‘nestling’ within the site and adopting a light touch in terms of footprint and height. The linear, single storey form has been designed to have a subtle & retained visual impact from Ellieslea Road, whilst using the natural privacy to enable a fully ‘opened’ West and South elevation, capitalising on the best aspects of the site. The use of high-quality monochrome aluminium and timber seeks to further root the proposals within the setting, complimenting the silvered sandstone that characterises the area.
