Aberfeldy Homes

Project  / Aberfeldy Cottage Hospital. Partial demolition and refurbishment of existing hospital to form 3 homes and 4 new build homes in grounds.

Client  / Private Developer

Description

These proposals seek retain the historically significant and traditional elements of the former cottage hospital, regenerating the existing fabric with internal adaptations to form 3 high quality residential dwellings - each with a unique character and nature. It is proposed that the lower grade 70’s era flat roofed ex-tensions of the hospital are demolished to allow each dwelling a large garden area with commanding views to the hills beyond.

The proposals also include for an additional 2 contextually sensitive and low mass architectural houses to either side of the property, taking the place of the former unsympathetic ancillary extensions and outbuildings of the hospital. Great care has been taken to ensure that the proposed newbuild dwellings respond appropriately to the existing hospital building. To this end, the proposed houses have been designed with a ridge line height that reads continuously with the existing building, fenestration of windows and openings that draw reference directly from the existing building, and a restrained palette of high quality natural materials selected to compli-ment the existing building and rural surrounds.

The design of the new build dwellings is bespoke to the site constraints and setting, with the aim of the houses to read as a considered and restrained village grouping with a community feel, designed to provide a cohesive character and sense of identity with a high qual-ity appearance. The design of the houses is intended to provide an active street-scape to the Old Crieff Road elevation, with each house being stepped back to fall in-line with the existing building. Each has a private external terrace to the rear, with a greater degree of glazing to allow a strong connection with the external environment.
