Strathearn Road

Project  / Extension to existing House, Strathearn Road Broughty Ferry

Client  / Private Client

Description

Our client  approached us with a vision to modernise and enhance his family home, which he and his wife have lived in for many years. Positioned along Strathern Road in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, this two-storey detached dwelling sits on a desirable corner plot with a sizeable south-facing garden, offering privacy with mature hedges within a tranquil setting.

The client wanted to maintain the character of his home while making it better suited to his family's evolving needs, including a range of aesthetic and environmental enhancements that would transform the comfort and efficiency of the home. These included new external wall insulation, an air source heat pump, aluminum triple-glazed windows, a new slate roof, and a new crisp, white render finish throughout.

Our approach was to draw these modern interventions together with respect for the character of the original house, ensuring a cohesive and appealing design. One key feature was the addition of a new sun-room extension, replacing an existing conservatory. This new space floods the home with natural light and creates an inviting, warm atmosphere, perfect for relaxation. We also re-designed the entrance hall to create a more welcoming focal point, using clean lines and modern materials to enhance the property’s street appeal, instantly drawing attention.

The kitchen was replanned and expanded to become a functional and spacious heart of the home. Additionally, we added a master bedroom ensuite and an upper-floor office, providing much-needed private spaces for relaxation and productivity. Extensive south-facing glazing, including large sliding glass doors, seamlessly connects the living spaces to the garden, making the most of natural light and outdoor views.

To enhance the connection with the garden, we introduced new level access decking to increase the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a natural extension of the living space. Sustainability was also a priority, with features such as an air source heat pump, photovoltaic panels incorporated ensuring the home is future proofed and meets modern environmental standards.

The result is a beautifully modernised home that retains its original charm while embracing contemporary design and sustainability.
