Project / The Birdhide. Bespoke new-build dwelling designed around a comprehensive integration with local wildlife.
Client / Private Client
Description
The aim of this project was to design a small-scale, bespoke eco-home that supports an active Wildlife Corridor, while providing a hidden viewing platform for our client to take in the local flora and fauna. The design will ensure the ongoing sustainability of the site and the active migration of wildlife.

Design Approach
The design approach is guided by three fundamental principles:
-
Wildlife Corridor Function
-
The design establishes a large, open ‘transitory’ route, fulfilling the corridor function that is currently lacking. The dwelling is specifically designed to enhance this migratory route, integrating wildlife movement seamlessly into the living environment.
-
-
Contextual & Environmental Integration
-
The building is modest in scale, designed to nestle within the site with minimal footprint and height. The West elevation references the nearby old water mill, maintaining privacy and fitting sensitively into the streetscape. The rear elevation offers a contemporary birdhide-like design with large-scale windows and viewing platforms, fostering a deep connection with the wildlife corridor.
-
High-quality natural stone and timber materials integrate the design with the surrounding context, with the building's massing aligned with the street edge and the mill's existing gable.
-
-
Natural Elements
-
The design respects the natural features of the site. No mature trees will be removed, and the building's windows are placed to work in harmony with the existing tree cover, preserving the site’s ecological value.
-
-
‘Inside-Outside’ House
-
The dwelling is designed to encourage a strong connection between interior living spaces and the natural environment through strategically framed views and a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.

This bespoke eco-home offers a carefully integrated solution that respects its natural surroundings, supports a wildlife corridor, and provides a comfortable, sustainable living space. The design fosters a harmonious relationship between built form and nature, ensuring the longevity of both the house and its ecological function.
